Weekly Wednesday Feature : Liquid Gold - The Secret Goodness Behind Bone Broth

6/15/2016

Here at White Birch we've started offering a new kind of liquid nutrition. We now offer Bone Broth!
Our bone broth comes from simmering our locally raised, grassfed chicken's bones with local veggies and herbs for a very long time until they blend into a perfect chicken broth. (Don't worry, we make a vegetarian option too!) This broth specifically helps reduce the effects of aging, boosts your immune system, increases your joint health, and much more! Now I'm sure you're curious as to how a simple broth could have all these benefits. Bone broth contains Collagen, Glycine, Calcium, Phosphorus, Magnesium, Glycosaminoglycans, and Iodine. All together these nutrients help turn back the aging clock on your skin, bones, and joints! As well as aids in regaining thickness of hair, and helps with weightloss. Bone Broth is not only soul warming, but is incredibly filling. You can eat it alone or use it as a base in many different meals.

Be sure to come in and try this liquid gold for yourself! We have samples, and if you like its savory goodness we are now selling it by the quart! So be sure to stop in and say hello, and ask us questions about this amazing broth!

Weekly Wednesday Feature: Greener-Ade and "Hand-Hacked" Coconuts

It has been long overdue for a new Wednesday Feature, but we are back with some really cool news for you all!
Let's all take a minute to welcome the newest juice to the White Birch Juice menu. "Greener-Ade " is a perfect source of all natural hydration.
Picture
Greener-Ade is an all natural alternative to sports drinks providing you the same hydration benefits, but in a way that is much more kind to your body.
Cucumbers, Celery, Coconut Water, Pineapple, Green Apple, and Spinach. Cucumbers are known for their ability to aid in weight loss, and help your skin glow. But what is generally overlooked is their ultra refreshing qualities and how many of the minerals and vitamins they have assisting in rehydrating and regulating body temperature at a nice cool temp. Celery is a great source of sodium that your body needs to prevent cramps. This is part of the reason Greener-Ade is so perfect for the summer, it's not only refreshing but it helps prevent your body from cramping up, and slowing you down during this active and warm season. Coconut Water is key for hydration, we use our own "Hand-Hacked" small thai coconuts to make the coconut water featured in Greener-Ade and soon to be a feature in other drinks as well. (See picture below)
Coconut Water is rich in potassium and minerals that make it more effective than regular water to hydrate your body, and is often used in emergency dehydration situations to quickly and effectively rehydrate your body.
Pineapple, Green Apple, and Spinach all have a wide range of vitamins and iron that work more effectively than the supplements you will find in sports drinks to keep you happy, hydrated, and energized without the hard sugar crash at the end. All of these combinations of vitamins and minerals not only taste amazing, but in addition to coconut water they all work in a perfect balance to keep you refreshed and hydrated. So it not only tastes amazing, it is amazing for you as well. Your body will thank you for the delicious pick me up that it needs to beat the heat.

Eat that Up its Good For You - Cilantro

Picture
Cilantro is a herb that not only tastes delicious but provides essential resources for the earth and your body.  Cilantro is an excellent source of Vitamin A, Vitamin K, Iron, Folate, Vitamin B6, Vitamin C, Manganese, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc, Niacin, and Riboflavin.  Cilantro is also an easily home grown herb that produces another place for bees to pollinate and promotes the extension of bee life.

I'm sure I'm already boring you with the logistics of why Cilantro is so great for your body, so I'm going to break it down for you on why Cilantro is without a doubt a must have in your spring diet.

Cilantro like I said before is LOADED with your daily dosage of vitamins and minerals.
Vitamin A is essential in the spring time as the weather gets warmer, you're going to want to get out and get going more. Vitamin A is great for your heart, lungs, and kidneys as well as works as a regulator for your body. This vitamin is perfect for helping you creep out of your winter hibernation.

Vitamin K works as a regulator of calcium through out your body, making sure that your blood and bones stay functional and strong which will come in handy as you begin making your spring and summer adventures, which makes Cilantro something you want to consume after hiking, running, biking, any activity that could cause pain in your bones is naturally remedied by strengthening your bones which cilantro does!

Cilantro is also packed with Iron. Iron is essential to hair growth and skin care. As the sun starts beaming down, you're going to want a little more Iron in your life to help out the sun screen in protecting your skin from harmful elements.

Cilantro also contains folates that regulate and keep in balance your heart, reproductive organs, and your colon.  These organs are very important and sometimes the health of these organs go over looked. Incorporating a little Cilantro here and there lowers your chance of heart and colon disease! Keeping you healthy for the Spring and Summertime!

Vitamin B-6 is another vitamin that helps with hair and skin health, but also helps your liver and assists your body in metabolizing fat as well, which helps you maintain a healthy diet and helps your body work at maintaining regularity healthily.

Vitamin C helps your heart keep pumping, boost your immune system to fight off the spring crud that occasionally goes around this time of year, it also helps your eyes regain and maintain strength and helps reduce your chances of losing your vision as you get older.  Manganese and Phosphorus are relatively intimidating sounding minerals, but they both help out with bone health and bone strength by helping to strengthen your bone marrow, and has many of the same bone health qualities as Vitamin K. However, the mineral Magnesium helps out with something a little different. Magnesium is a natural stress reliever and the consumption of Magnesium (found as one of the prime minerals in cilantro) magnesium also regulates Potassium and Sodium which helps prevent unwanted weight gain and body stress.

Cilantro is also a great source of Niacin, a natural cleansing mineral that helps fight away the bad cholesterol  and promotes heart health in the process by helping push out all of the bad toxins your body picks up on a daily basis.

Lastly, Cilantro contains the mineral Riboflavin, this helps your body produce energy, and oxygen flow through your body which is essential as humidity becomes more present, and the air is thicker and harder to breathe.

Cilantro is a key ingredient in our spring juices because it helps you be kind to your body and naturally gets you ready for the summer heat. Be kind to your body this season, and help it grow by consuming Cilantro, which you can find in our juices - while it may sound odd, I promise it's delicious and your body will be thanking you too!

Weekly feature: "Kale: The QUEEN of GREENS!"

12/8/2015

As we begin our new series, "Feature of the week," you will find us spotlighting our lovely juice family, local growers, ingredients & their health benefits and much more!

This week: KALE. "The New Beef?" "The Queen of Greens?" We sure think so!  Kale, Yeah, for this amazing superfood!
Picture
Tuscan or "dinosaur" black kale
We would like to introduce you to our Kale source, (as local as it gets!) Blue Door Garden, here in Abingdon, VA, where Tom & Deni Peterson  have been growing food & flowers for decades. They produce some of the finest, most nutrient dense fruits & vegetables we have ever juiced. We just LOVE their Tuscan or "dinosaur" kale, pictured above.

What makes it as nutrient packed as this? It's LOCAL, meaning it hasn't traveled thousands of miles, from farm to juice. Often times, it is picked that day and juiced! Now that's real living goodness. Also, the Tuscan variety is unique as well, for its extremely high antioxidant level,
among the most antioxidant-rich foods on Earth. The antioxidants in Tuscan black kale destroy free radicals, unstable molecules that can cause damage to your body at the cellular level. The damage caused by free radicals has been implicated in the pathogenesis of a wide range of diseases and health problems, including asthma, macular degeneration, diabetes, heart disease, thrombosis, atherosclerosis, pre-mature aging of the skin, Alzheimer's disease, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Check them out at the Abingdon Farmers Market, on the end by the staircase (and on Facebook too!). You won't regret it! Support your local growers & businesses today :)

At the juice bar, we get asked, "So, what's your   favorite  juice?" all of the time!  This is a super difficult question to answer...mostly  because  our favorites are changing all. of. the. time. Especially as we continue to add more delicious juice flavors!

First, check out our awesome team--we've  included our  favorites in the descriptions!

Some first-time juice tasters came into the juice bar recently, sampled  our juice for the first time, and let us know what they liked!

We had our Ruby Red (carrot, apple, beet, ginger, pineapple, celery) &  Garden Goodness (apple, celery, cucumber, peashoots, spinach, cilantro, lime) out for sampling, so everyone tried a little!

Our new friends decided on Pink Punch, Garden Goodness, and a Blueberry Blast Smoothie (YUM.)

Cameron (seen on the below, on the right), said, "This is the best juice I've ever tasted!"

Not only did they love the  taste of their juices, but later that day, we received this text:

Some post-Halloween reading recommendations for better health!

11/1/2015

Did you have a happy Halloween??

We hope you had fun! For us,  after eating probably WAY too much candy and  sweets around Halloween,  we  start to think about  making more nutritious choices (&  give our bodies  a break!).

One way to do this is juicing! Drinking juice  until dinnertime  for  a few days  gives your body a well-deserved,  gentle rest!

Today we are listing some of our favorite blog posts, recipes, and more to combat that post-Halloween feeling!
Picture

1.  This blog post discusses the consequences for your body after eating  too much Halloween candy...and then  gives some ways to prevent  the  sugar overload that the holidays bring!
2. We love fall for SO many reasons (ahem...pumpkin spice...everything?), but the sweet foods, cold weather, and more  can cause havoc in your body! Here's a quick list of tips on how to stay healthy  and happy during this time of year!
Picture
3.  What's YOUR favorite  fall  food?  You might want to reevaluate that  (if it's not a root vegetable, that is!).  Root veggies  have so many wonderful nutrients and grounding qualities, and it is the perfect time  time of year to FALL in love with them! Check out this guide to  root vegetables--it provides everything from health benefits to  preparation tips!
4.  We love squash. And quinoa. And avocado. Here's a recipe that combines all of these incredible ingredients for  one delicious, versatile,  and filling meal!
Picture
5.  It's really hard to give up the candy.  We know. BUT,  NO FEAR...we have a plan. Check out this recipe for CHOCOLATE CARAMEL TURTLES! They are vegan and free of refined  sugar!  YUM.

Have a happy November!  (And don't forget! If you cleanse with a friend during the month of November...you get 10%  off!  Grab your  buddy and  get some yummy nutrients!)

Mix up those greens!

10/25/2015

Have you heard? It's important to rotate the variety of greens that you consume on a regular  basis!

Wait, what?  Why?

1. Greens are very different! They all have unique compositions and  a variety of nutritious  vitamins  & minerals! Rotate your greens to get as many of these incredible nutrients as possible!
Picture
2. To avoid  intake of  certain toxins. Consuming high amounts of only one type of green,  especially when it is spinach, can cause you to experience symptoms of toxicity.
Picture
3. To increase the  diversity of COLOR in your diet!  We all know that it is essential to "eat the rainbow"  to  feel good & healthy, so use the abundance of greens available (especially during fall!)  to get  as  much  GREEN in as possible.
Picture

TIP:  Mix up your  greens easily and cost-effectively!

Buy one type of green each week  for all of your  recipes,  and change the  variety each week!
Picture
Click the photo for an delicious recipe idea! <3

PLUS,  here at White Birch Juice, we have plenty of options to switch up your greens!  Obsessed with the Green Gold (kale, cucumber, apple, celery, mint, & lime)?  Switch it up  every once in a while and grab a Garden Goodness (spinach, pea shoots, celery, cucumber, cilantro, apple, &  lime)! Yum!
